Today I went and picked blackberries. They are little and squishy, and very hairy. It could be worse. They are not too seedy, and they are extremely sweet, and most of the hair washed off them anyway. The undersides of my nails are all black so I look like I have been scraping out a barn with my naked fingertips, but its worth it. I am going to make a pie.

Mochi wants to know if anyone on the east coast wants to invite him to stay with them while his mommy and daddy find a place to live in New York. He wants me to mention that he is a very good house guest (poops in a box, will bring his own bed and food, and will buy you beer and pizza). He gets on well with other cats and people (although he's not a big fan of dogs). Also, he promises not to give you poison oak.

It is Mochi's birthday today. He is six years old. He is now comfortably middle-aged. Except for his asthma. It doesn't like all this smoke.

His birthday has made me a little sad, because it makes me realize that, provided things go according to plan, I will out-live him. That just isn't fair. Pets should get to live as long as we do.

So instead of the normal three days I left my tepache for a week. Instead of tasting sweet and mildly fermented this stuff actually smelled and tasted like alcohol, and so much of the sugar had been converted that we had to add more to make it tasty. I thought about throwing it out, for fear of it making someone go blind or something else horrible. The guys, on the other hand, were stoked. The older the better was their reaction. All in all it was pretty awesome.

It is the mOmster's birthday. Yay! She is awesome. Also, apparently she is not answering her phone, so I got to sing "happy birthday" and "the old gray mare" to her voicemail.

Had a really terrible day. Really wanting to know why this shit just keeps on coming.

Having a party tomorrow. Really hoping everything starts smoothing out. Trying. All I have to do is make cupcakes, and make all the food I bought at Costco look pretty. I am going to pick up some flower and herbs. That should do the trick.

I am planning to make red velvet cupcakes with butter cream frosting, decorated with little piped raspberry vines, complete with fresh raspberries. I am do for a baking project. My day today was like that. Let the baking begin!

I am moving in 11 days. It is all starting to sink in, and I am starting to get a little bit sad. I am looking forward to being back in CA for a bit, but mostly am terrified of New York. Scary. I have lots of packing and selling to do. Yikes. A little break from all that needs to be done, we have had some friends from New Zealand in town. I love Kiwis! And I miss being surrounded by them all the time. Now I desperately want to go back and visit, but it is going to be a long time before that happens, and that makes me sad.

I figured out what this is! Now its going to be my recipe section, where I can put up recipes.

Chocolate Pots de Créme:

Heat, but do not boil:
2 cups of heavy cream.
4 oz. finely chopped dark chocolate

Mix:
8 large egg yolks
1/2 cup sugar

Once chocolate is totally melted add the hot cream mixture to the egg mixture in a slow stream while mixing. Place ramekins in a bain-marie. Strain the liquid through a find mesh into the ramekins. Bake at 250 for about an hour. Let cool until room temp. Refrigerate. Best made a day ahead. Top can be caramelized to make chocolate créme brûlée.

Mixed Roast:

1/2 head of cabbage, cut into 4 pieces
4 hole onions, peeled and trimmed
1 large orange sweet potatoe, peeled and quartered
2 small red or white potatoes, peeled hole
1 large red or gold (any color but orange) sweet potatoe, peeled and quartered
2 large carrots, peeled, trimmed, and cut into thirds
2 turnips, pealed, trimmed, and quartered
1 lb well marbled beef, cut into four pieces
1 light brown gravy packet whisked whisked with 2 cups of water
salt and pepper to taste Rosemarry to taste

Combine ingrediants in a large baking pan (crock-pot) and roast for 6 hours at 250 degrees.

Mole Turkey:

Add to pan or crock-pot:
6 turkey pieces rubbed with salt and pepper
3 whole peeled onions

Blend until smooth:
1 jar mole paste
4 jars of water and wisk

Stir mole over a medium heat until it starts to thicken. Pour over turkey. Cook all day in the crock-pot, or for 4 hours in a 300 degree oven.

Lemmon Poppy Seed Cake:

Preheat oven to 325.

Cream:
1/2 lb butter
1 1/3 cut sugar

Wisk:
5 eggs
Zest of 1 lemmon
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 Tsp poppy seeds

Add the egg mixture in a very slow stream to the butter mixture, while beating at a medium-high speed. Beat until fluffy.

Sift twice:
2 cups flour

Add the flour to butter/egg mixture in three parts while beeting on low-medium speed. Finish with a rubber spatula by hand. Butter and flour a bunt pan. Spread batter evenly into pan. Bake for 1 hour, until toothpick comes out clean.
